--------------------------------------
Released in 1999, the Waldorf Q is one of the most powerful virtual analog digital synthesizers ever created. It comes in 16 or 32 voice (rare) versions and is 16-part multi-timbral, which allows for many sounds at once in live performances, and features a ton of hands-on control.
The Waldorf Q has 3 oscillators (saw, triangle, sine, square w/ PWM and 2 wavetables on osc 1/2), a ring modulator, oscillator sync, FM between osc 1-3, glide, noise, pitch mod, and supports external audio-in and a vocoder. The Waldorf Q also has 3 LFOs with 6 waveshapes (sine, tri, saw, square, S&H, random) which go into audio rate and support sync, delay, keytracking, fade, clock, and phase.
The filter section of the Waldorf Q is very flexible thanks to a dual filter setup for both serial and parallel filter modes, and the routing can be adjusted by various amounts. There are multiple filter types (LPF, PPG Lowpass, BPF, HPF, Notch, Comb), slopes (12 and 24 dB), and controls (cutoff, resonance, keytracking, envelope, pan and pan mod, FM, drive) for the filters.
In addition to this, the Waldorf Q features 4 envelopes (filter, amp and 2 mod envelopes), all of which can be looped. It also has 2 FX engines with multiple effects (chorus, delay, phaser, reverb, downsampler, 5.1 delay, tap delay, overdrive and more), a programmable arpeggiator (accents, timing, swing, glide, chords, velocity and more) and a 32-step polyphonic sequencer with saveable patterns.
Furthermore, the Waldorf Q has a 16-slot modulation matrix which runs at audio rate depending on the type of routings, has "modifiers" (addition, subtraction, multiplication, XOR, AND, OR, min, max) to further enhance routings, and has a patch morphing capability (Xphorm) between 2 sounds at once.
The Waldorf Q's extension output options, including digital S/PDIF, provides pristine sound quality, and the 61-key aftertouch keyboard feels great. With room for 300 custom patches, drum maps and 100 performances, there is plenty of room to store your sounds.
The Waldorf Q is exceptionally powerful and versatile for sound creation and live performance, and can do everything from pads, leads, basses, effects, FM tones, to all types of soundscapes and wavetable-based sounds. It is a fantastic synth to get lost in and can take you places most digital synths can only dream of. From my observation they are available on the second hand market but are somewhat difficult to come by, and prices have been rising over the years.
The Waldorf Q represents the pinnacle of their virtual analog digital synthesizer design and even though it was released in 1999, it still remains far ahead of its time even 20+ years later. If you have the opportunity to get your hands on one, you won't be disappointed.

This synth goes to 11 - such a range of extremes. Love it
Johnny's great, and big thumbs up for the ESQ1!!
I have the MKS-50, MKS-70 and D50 with the PG-300, PG800 and PG1000 programmers now 😌
RIP Gert! Thanks for the video
All this, LIVE, out of just one small box. - incredibile !
Thank you! Yes, all from the DM12 live in one take.
I’ve been thinking of getting one of these for awhile now and this video is not helping my wallet lol great video as always 🔥🎹
Thanks! Its a great synth
The digital engine on the JDXA is nice. But that’s not why I bought it. I know it only has four analog voices, but I get stuff out of this synth that I don’t hear in other synthesizes. The envelopes are incredibly fast. They really get the filters whipping and snapping. The JD-XA is so terribly underrated. I paired it with the system eight and never looked back. I also have a summit and an iridium keyboard. I still reach for the JD analog engine often. I see the used prices are starting to get higher. It shouldn’t be dismissed. Yes there’s menu diving if you want to get that involved, But for the most part it’s a hands on beast. I’ve gotten sounds outta this engine that usually require modular.
More is not always better. For me this is one of the worst demos out there of the pe. I think it makes sense that it has 4 voices.
A great video! Having only seen pictures of the A6, I had never heard it by itself. This was SO far ahead of its time. I see a lot of its capabilities in the Arturia Polybrute. The 'Brute far outshines the A6 in some aspects, but then, the A6 is far more capable in others. It's a good thing I don't have the room, or I'd go do something dumb and pay several $k for one.
A6 was far ahead of its time and still very powerful today. Polybrute is also a great choice and can do many things. A6 still wins in multi-timbral mode!
I have my CS30 modified with individual cv and gate jacks, paired up with a cv.ocd which makes the CS30 a duophonic midi synth. Absolutely killer. This synth should have always been duophonic.
That sounds amazing!
Dude out here makes the Minecraft music… I like it
There's a rumour that Cherry Audio are about to release an emulation of this beast. If so, good choice - a UI that allows easy sound design will be a massive help. What a beautiful sounding synth!
Wow, my old friend. The first synth I ever owned in the 1970’s that I kept till the early 1980’s. Purchaed on 48th street at Sam Ash. They only had a floor model so they set me a few blocks over to the studio owned by Mr. Walter Sear who welcomed me in while he pulled a new one in a box, out of a huge hidden closet while I drooled over his Moog IIc. It was cheaper than the Mini Moog with all those cool patch points. I was the ‘first kid on the block’ with a synth. Many wonderful memories jamming with friends down my basement and then out on the road in clubs. I actually wore out the Prat Reed keyboard and had to order replacement in the late 70’s. I traded it in late 70’s toward the purchase of a MultiMoog which was my last monophonic instrument. I then traded the MultiMoog toward the purchase of a Jupiter 6 polyphonic instrument which I then sold to fund a purchase of a DX7 that I got at a deep discount and I was off into the world of midi sequencers and rack mounted gear attached to a PC clone running Sequencer Plus under MS DOS. Never thought these instruments would be so valuable in 2024 and featured as odd relic. Grateful to be around in those days both playing and then selling these instruments myself on 48th Street before all those stores shutdown 30 years later. Loved my EML 101!
Great story and memories, thanks for sharing. Sounds like the EML 101 kicked off a long music career and opportunity to try different synths throughout!
It’s still a massive synth. Does the PG 1000 work with boutique D50?
Yes I believe so
Is it still as good? Will there be a desktop? Is it enough to have Peak?
Peak is great but only 8 voices, no dual filter or external audio-in, and less knobs on front panel compared to Summit. I doubt there will be a desktop of the Summit.
Didn't they have an optional set of legs that screwed into the front panel so that it could be turned upside down and used as a desk?
I have owned this synth for about 12 years and am just now starting to understand it! Thank you for a great video.
Thanks for watching. Enjoy your A6!
How does this compare to Virus TI
This is nonsense.
Excellent! Thank you
Thanks for watching!
First time hearing this little machine. Very impressed. I’m new to vector synthesis so just to be clear, on the last track are you working with just the one sample and adjusting the parameters within it?
I appreciate this is a 6 years old video, so no need to reply especially if you aren’t still alive!
Yes, this is just 1 patch. Within the patch are 4 tones / samples which you can cross-fade between using the vector joystick.
For some odd reason, you sound like the, "Seinfeld" version of George Steinbrenner. ( even the hand gestures)😊😮😅😊
Haha
In spite of the Tom Brokaw BREAKING NEWS INTRO THIS THING REALLY TOUCHES ALL MY ASMR SOFT-SPOTS!! ❤😊😋🫠I’m feelin’ all WARM & FUZZY!!! 💦💧🐟
Hehe... glad you enjoyed it Mr Katnip :)
Halloween Q forever
Great choice!
Was a proud owner of the Original Waldorf Q+ ruby red version. 100 Voices with 16 true analog filters! I should have never sold it!!!!
Wow that's a great version of the Q! Maybe someday you can get it back?
Wow! The An1x sounds amazing 😃🌈🕊🙏🏻✌🏻✨🕊
Yes indeed! Great VA synth
What version is this? Mine is 2.0. I have a Roland gp-16 digital rack unit for my guitar. Can I saftely run my esq1 through it? Great demo, can you show us how to write to the card?
Hey there, not sure on version - I borrowed this synth from a friend to film the demo and don't have it anymore.
Sounds like Diva
Cool video but, did anyone else get motion sickness?
I have this synth 🙂
Nice! It's great.
butiful
Sounds gorgeous. I wish I bought one at the time, but the reviews weren’t particularly positive, with complaints of reliability and bugs, if I remember correctly. Just goes to show, you should follow your heart, not the reviews.
With time, perspectives change... but the specs don't lie. :)
The only equivalent that i know is the SY77 by Yamaha, replace the substractive part with FM, it's a workstation as well.
How does the Quantum compare I know it’s really not the same synth but the most similer modern comparison?
Quantum goes far beyond in terms of sound design possibilities, much more than just wavetable. Sound character is different from demos I've heard. Each synth has its own unique character.
legend is true : this synth sucks
Really is a unique gem to this day, I have the blue rack version expanded to 32 voices and it is the workhorse of my studio. Great sound and flexibility. Still need to give the vocoder a whirl.
Awesome, its great to have the 32-voice version.
@@synth4ever yeah I was lucky to find an expander card at a reasonable price, blue version doesn’t have the nextel paint, and instead has something that has sort of a satin gloss to it.
what is the parameter you modify in real time there with yes or no buttons?
Thank you for this detailed demonstration. I also love the Waldorf synths. I own the MW 1, MW XT, Pulse and soon the Iridium Keyboard. But I still wonder why they didn't just call the Q Microwave 3? Probably because the MW 2 was released 2 years earlier and they simply wanted to participate in the VA synthesizer hype at the end of the 90s.
Thanks for watching, appreciate the comment!
AMAZING MACHINE
Yes, very powerful synth!
@@synth4ever I had a Q+ line up…the Red one, you know. I opted, instead, to buy a John Bowen Solaris-serial #59, white. I sold it after having a MUST BE ANALOG fit. This led to SOLARIS number 3, BLACK-a gorgeous thing. I never did own a Q. Many many Waldorf vintage synths didn’t own, but never did snag a Q. WHO knows what the future holds. By now. I don’t even recall what the “+” added to the Q.
Synth makers should Watch this. What happened? It's 2024 and it's full of overpriced Toys.
thank you for your excellent test, I won't part with my Waldorf Q rack for anything in the world !
Thanks for watching! Hold onto your Q rack! :)
I LOVE your work here! <3
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the review.
I had most of the popular VA synths of the era. Novation Supernova, Roland JP8000, Access Virus C etc. And they where all great in their own ways and could often sound similar to each other but none of them could sound like the Q. The Q is the only one I still have from back then. I will never get rid of it.
Indeed, the Q has a distinct character which makes it unique in its own way.
Come on! Everybody has a price ?! 😀
Good luck my frend❤
🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤮………..Why??????????????????
?
1999 was my magic year in relation to music.. more precisely, to everything. A playstation on my birthday influenced me also to.
That was a great year indeed
Grait video ...finally
Thanks!
Its character always shows through the programming and its great for a certain sound but not so great for other VA duties where things like a virus C, supernova II, or Lead outshine it.
The Q definitely has its own character and sound.... just another tool in the kit alongside those others! :)
Beautiful music 🎶
Thank you!
